ultrasound for deep vein thrombosis?

about a month and a half ago, i had some pain in my left leg. it felt like a bruise on my left shin but there was no bruise. about a week later my left leg felt dead when i would go to bed. a week after that it felt like there was an air bubble in my left calf. maybe 3 weeks after that the back of my left thigh was tender and i had a large bruise shortly thereafter. about a day later, for maybe 2 days, my feet were sore and numb like the stinging feeling you get when you put your hands in ice water for too long. i had been sitting for a long time before i had the numbness. i didn't have any swelling but all of this made me worry that i might have a blood clot but everything seemed to be ok after all of that. fast forward to now. i told my doctor about it and he wants me to get an ultrasound to check for blood clots in my leg. it's been about 6 weeks since all of that happened and i don't have any of the symptoms since that time. if there was/is a blood clot, would it still be in my leg after so that much time? is it worth getting an ultrasound now? is it possible a clot traveled to my brain. i've had this weird headache for the last 3 days and i never get headaches.

so i gather you never actually obtained that ultrasound then? this really is one of the very best tests to have to really find a blood clot in a vessel. they use the doppler tool to check blood flow and velocity thru the vessels in your leg. had to have one myself before my RSD Dx was madejust to rule out a possible DVT/blood clot in my right leg. the thing is,with an actual blood clot being there, you would have alot of heat, redness, possible swelling some edema in the area at least below where that clot would have been. if you did not actually have these symptoms, then the blood clot theory probably was not ever actual? you know what i mean?

do you suffer from back or any level of spinal type pain anywhere along the spine? this is where i would look next for a possible underlying issue. some problems wont give you actual back pain or any real pain at all in the back itself, but can show very prominent symptoms in the lower torso, starting from like a butt cheek area on down thru your toes. while other issues can and will show very strong low back pain or pain way up in the spinal area just becasue of what it is that is the problem and what it is affecting in the spine or cord levels. obtaining an MRI at this point would just be the next logical step and area to look at. you simply track the symptoms back to the source, you know what i mean?

as far as any possible blood clot actually traveling from your leg to your brain? i would think, just considering that this would have had to have passed thru your heart in order to do just that, you would have had at leat some pretty prominant cardiac symptoms before that could have actually occured. the area where this would have affected would have been much further down than the brain. unless you are having those real symptoms of a blood clot in your leg as explained above,i would actually opt to have an MRI done of your spine vs the ultrasound, really. your symptoms just really do sound like more spine related than blood clot related to me anyways. but if it would at least ease YOUR mind to have an US,then do it,for your own peace of mind. been there done that one too over the years. but i personally don;t think at this point and given your symptoms that it really is needed, unless your symptoms change to what i posted about the blood clot symptoms? otherwise,i would just push for the MRI of your spine. this is what i would do if i were in your current place and with these symptoms showing.

just speak with your doc about what he/she thinks about where the most likely place to have these symptoms would be coming from, you know what i mean? i am sure, they would think the very same thing, spinal. then ask about having that MRI,with contrast if possible as it will simply help to highlight certain possible problems and show them much more clearly than without the contrast agent. good luck with this. please let me know how things are going. thanks for your response. i haven't had it done yet. i didn't want to have it done if it didn't need to be especially since i didn't have breathing problems or swelling and it's been 6 weeks. but maybe just to be on the safe side, i will schedule it next week. i don't think they will find anything. will post post procedure. is it expensive?

i have had back problems for a while but it doesn't seem like that that was the cause of it. i also have circulation problem-feet often cold- and don't know if that contributes to clots.

When I was diagnoised with my blood clot in my left leg, I was swelled from my thigh to my toes. My toes looked like sausages. My foot was white. My clot is below the knee, the Dr. said if it was above the knee they would admit me directly to the hospital but mine is below so they started me on coumadin right away.
