I was watching one of those Police show and it said that the criminal was sentenced to "Four months imprisonment, suspended for one year"

Does it mean he got off with a prison sentence?

Its suspended for one year so as long as he doesn't appear before the Court agaiin in that 12 months, he won't serve the sentence.

It means that he has to do four months in prison, but he doesn't have to it right now, he has to do it in a year.

grey harbour: dont answer questions you know nothing about,

it means he got four months but he may end up not atcually serving them if he stays out of trouble for a year but the next thing he does that alnds him in court will mean he will have to serve the four months.so the first guy was right.
