A friend of mine explained that every mother-to-be in the UK receives a £190 maternity grant and child benefit once the child is born, as well as £250 for the child to go into their own little savings account.

My friend also said that even if you work there are other benefits you are entitled to, but she wasn't specific... Does anyone know what these are? I don't even know where to begin looking!

Thanks for your help.

you can claim working tax credits and they top up your wages depending on what you earn t, they all help pay childcare fee's if your a lone parent i think you maybe able to claim something else but I'm not sure what

look up the job centre plus website or go into your local job centre plus office as they can advise you. you may be entitled to working and child tax credit, (if both parents are together and living together might only be working tax credit but you must work over 16 hours pw) child benefit, and some are still entitled to milk tokens. i used to be a lone parent advisor and alot were really misinformed by this.
