UK: Is it possible/easy to buy and run a car if you earn a low salary?

I'm talking about a single male, over 25, earning between £12K and £16K per year, paying rent in a flat or shared house in the West Midlands.

The reason I ask is that I've heard a lot of people on much higher salaries (£20K-£30K) complain and moan at how expensive it is to run a car, and I was wondering how people on lower wages managed. Do you run an old "banger" for example or is that a false economy?

I'm speaking as a non car owner here so please keep it simple.

Possible, not easy. As long as you can afford to buy it in the first place and set money aside for insurance that sort of thing it's doable.

I bought a 15 year old nissan micra as my first car and it was excellent. I paid £200 and it was MOT'd for a year, it passed the next one no problem, my insurance was £40 a month but i think it would be less for you because of your age. I could fill the tank on £40 which would last at least a week and a half because it was a small engine. Just make sure you get one thats easy servicable. My current car is 1.6 engine, about 130 a month in petrol and £50 for insurance.
