UGH! just ran out of the worst grooming studio ever! What should i look for in a...

...groomer? I dont know about groomers really but i just left the groomers from hell and had to share. I walked in and the place was filthy, not just pet hair but dust to high heaven! I waited 10 min before anyone came to the counter but in the mean time i could hear dogs whimpering and howling. From the desk i could see (what i thought was) a woman "Grooming" a toy poodle, of course the dog didn't like it so it was trying to get away. The "groomer" grabbed it by the throat and pinned it down to work on the cut. And by pinned, i mean it might as well have been a wrestling move.

When the people actually came out they saw my pure breed pom pup and said "aww, what kind of dog is it"... WHAT? you claim to be a groomer and dont know what a pom pup looks like?

I ran out of this "the hills have eyes" horror movie as fast as i could.

What is your worst groomer experience?
What should i look for in picking one for my poms?

Please don't waste my time or yours going on a useless rant. It makes you look ignorant, not me.
Point of clarification: I understand that some dogs need to be held down in order to be properly groomed however I was not exaggerating when I mentioned that he was wrestle style pinned. I have seen dogs squirm less when they get shots.
I also realize that places get dusty because of the nature of the business however this was out of the ordinary seeing as when i left i went to another groomers who was much more well kept.

Please don't answer questions so harshly, I'm sure you have heard the adage: "its not what you say its how you say it" so if you want any one to listen to your "advice"say it in at least a mutually respectful manner; don't act like I made a personal attack on you.

thank you for the great answers. The groomer didn't grab him by the scruff of the neck, the grooming table was 5 ft from me and it was the throat. The poodle was so little i could see the fingers coming around on the other side before he put its face to the table. It was really sad and disturbing.
 
Five MINUTES after being cleaned-to-BEDROCK every shop will be covered in hair & "dust"!

Customers bring in FILTHY DOGS!!!!!!

*&*..you want the monster DONE correctly? W/out being cut,biting, leaving gaping holes or mats?? THEY **********MUST************** HOLD STILL!!!

Do your "pureBRED" dogs even faintly resemble correct specimens?

it just depends on the shop not all shops are like that yes you can ask a vet just dont go to petco pr petsmart i work with a lady that has been trained from there it may look good up front but in the back where those tinted windows are she has seen people hang dogs, cut holes in them and one dog died beacsue of the careless of one groomer she didn't pay attaention while the dog fell off the table it was hanging by the time my co worker walked into the room it was to late so watever you do please please dont go to petco or petsmart
 
When I got my first yorkie I joined a few yorkie/small dog meetups and got a good recommendation...My toy poodle has been a bit different and Ive gone though 2 different groomers.One of which left soars on my dogs armpit areas and feet. It was horrible,my dog was probably in pain(it makes me sad still)...this groomer claimed she was familiar with poodles and said my dog had matted hair(not true).Tangles and matted hair are very different.She was just very green...but I still go to the same place and the owner cuts my dogs.The lady that gave my dog soars is no longer working there,I think she lasted another month after that incident.


I guess if I knew my dog was difficult to groom I would probably just do it myself...I wouldn't want to put my dog under that kind of stress.

The best way to find a good groomer is to hang out with some dog people...try meetup.com or when you see a dog that looks nice and groomed ask about where they go.

ADD: i now have transitioned into doing a lot of the grooming myself...I went to my breeders for several lessons...usually your breeder is a great tool for learning grooming as most all do it themselves.
 
I agree, if you happen to see a dog that is well taken care of and groomed properly, ask the owner where they go. Your vet probably either offers a grooming service or can tell you a good one.

I know what you mean though. We moved to this new town and I called to make an appointment at the "best rated" place in town. They asked the breed of my dog, and when I told them he was a Maltese, they were like " what is that, some kind of cross breed?" I was thinking "no way in hell I'm taking my dog to a place that doesn't even know one of the oldest toy breeds!"
