...and thrown overboard ? Does anybody buy me think that is a little irresponsible?? It was on national geographic channel, show was USS reagan, or something of the sort.
They also said that it was biodegradable??? is this true, and if it is not, then what the hell are they doing???

Recyclables are collected, compacted, baled and transferred to one of the carrier group supply vessels for storage until they arrive in the next port of call.

About the only thing they may dispose of at sea is waste food, but that is ground to a fine paste and then mixed with water prior to being pumped overboard.

Swens' comments on artificial reefs is mostly correct, but these artificial reefs are created in fairly shallow water, where sport divers can explore the new "reef" and enjoy it's inhabitants.

Aluminum cans are degradable in sea water. We need not be concerned about that, but it might be better to simply crush the cans into a block to save space. Saving weight is harder to resolve. that might mean transferring the block to another vessel.
