U.S. bankruptcy court in New York considered state or federal court?

I'm reading up on the Madoff scandal involving the Ponzi Scheme, and I'm unsure if the U.S. bankruptcy court is considered state or federal. This case was filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy court in New York, but if thats considered state (which I'm not sure if it is), could it have also been tried in Federal Court?
