U joints, squealing noise Jeep Cherokee?

1998 Jeep Cherokee, i hear an intermittant squealing noise when driving. Thought is was the wheel bearings but the mechanic says they're fine. He claims I need my u joints replaced and quoted me 4-500$ to do it. Does any of this sound accurate? I'm a girly girl that knows jack about cars btw.
