Type of paint for painting a wood instrument?

Painting the back of a ukulele, what kind of paint should I use? Acrylic? but all the ones I've found are water-based and I'm not sure if that would be good or not. I obviously don't want the paint to chip off.
I was thinking of putting a top coat of some sort on as well.
And what about a base coat?
