Tx or T3? Which one would you suggest?

I'd like to upgrade my m515 (which I sold a week ago), I've been looking at Tx and T3. E2 also crossed my mind but I really like the bigger screens of the T-series.

So which one should I buy? My priorities (I'm not naming the obvious such as calendar etc.) are below;

Top priorities;
-Small size
-Good, large screen
-Charger cable can be separated from the sync station, i.e., I can keep the charging cord in my bedroom for overnight charging and I can take the sync station to my workplace for syncing
-Long battery life
-Bluetooth to connect to the internet via my cell phone

Let me know what you think, I really don't know how these two devices compare against each other.

I'd take a look at a thread titled "Palm announces the TX and the z22"

There are some good comments on here, and a couple of stallwart t3 users looking to upgrade to a TX. I for one seriously considered the upgrade from T3, partly driven by poor battery life on the T3, digitizer drift on the lower part of the T3 screen, and the added benefit of W-fi on the Tx.

Personally would have done so, but have today ordered my treo 650 - if that doesn't work out, i'll prob go for a TX.

That's my view... and only my view...

Hope this helps, but take a look at the thread.

Too bad Tapwave went out of business. You might still be able to find a Zodiac 1 or 2 new, though... I got a Z1 for $199 from J&R this past Spring. Two SD slots, 320x480 screen, decent battery life, Bluetooth (I connect with my phone to retrieve e-mail and browse occasionally), charger and cradle can be separated.

That said, the TX sounds good. I'm a little leery of NVFS myself, though.

What's NVFS?

T3 looks like a better choice at the moment. How long is the battery life? I really don't need WiFi.

Sony Clie's look nice but the price tag is too much and I don't like memory sticks; too expensive and work only with Sony's.

I'll check out the Zodiacs, even if TapWare has gone out of business, I would still presume the support works at least for the next few years?

More opinions please, I only know Palms so other devices can be suggested as well. See the list of requirements on my first post. Thanks.

The other thing to consider (and this is what really made my decision when switching from a m515 to a T3) is what sort of compatibility you will have .....

with:

chargers
hot sync cable
programs ???
other??

When I went to switch from my m515 to ?????? many of the newer models out there would have required that I purchase all new "gear". I am ASS U ME ing that this would be the case for this Tx ?????

Anyone want to chime in?

Later,

Syno

Actually I gave all the m515 gear along with the unit, so that's not a concern.

I really like the T3, as it is smaller and cheaper than f.ex. TX but there must be something that I can't see. It's a shame I can't try these units anywhere, I would really like to know how the T3 looks and feels in real life, on paper the retractable(?) form factor seems like a good idea.

Actually the only thing I'm now conserned about T3 is the battery... I can only find these second-hand and I think the battery could be very worn.

EDIT: But like I said, I'm open to all brands, even pocketpc ;) But I don't think I can find as small and inexpensive pocketpc machine as f.ex. Palm T3.

NVFS is Non-Volatile File System (in other words, Flash instead of conventional RAM). Because of the way Flash memory is handled, some apps don't work properly until they're updated.

Zodiac support is pretty much gone. I think a third party is handling warranty claims already in the pipeline, but I don't know if they're handling any new claims. When I bought my Zodiac, it was known that Tapwave would no longer be making Zodiacs-- but the company shut down completely instead of just discontinuing the product. That said, I've had no problems at all with mine. (I had no problems with my Tungsten E, either, aside from a slight screen whine. And the not-so-good battery life.)

The only Clies you'll find will be either used or "new old stock," since Sony got out of the PDA business in the US.

I've been reading reviews all night and here's the final three I am considering, each with it's pros and cons. This is hard...

Tx
+the newest model, my common sense says it's the "best" but I really don't know why
-expensive

T3
+small, the flip-top seems like a good idea
+very cheap (second-hand)
-as they are all second-hand, I can't be sure of what I'm getting if I buy one
-abysmal battery life

T5
+cheap'ish :)
-larger than T3
-some people say it's T3 plus some software problems and a worse casing

So if someone has any comments, please let me know. And if anyone knows a good condition used Tx, T3 or T5, contact me. Thanks!

Having moved from the T3 to the TX, I can highly recommend the TX over a used T3. The digitizer drift problems with the T3 made the large screen and hence the slider useless. My battery had degraded severely. Replacement batteries are available and fairly simple to install (and cheap). The digitiser problem is more expensive to fix. A replacement screen (new) I found on the Web was priced at $100 plus shipping.

I considered getting a new battery and screen but could not resist the great looks of the TX which has a much better screen than the T3 but not as good (I hear) as the TE2.

Cheers!

Greg

Some features you also need to consider include voice recording and the silent alarms. The T3 has voice recording and the vibrating alarm features. The latest devices no longer include these features.

I have had my T3 for 2 years and have never noticed screen drifting. As for the slider on the T3, I have mixed feelings about it. Yes, it is great for making the T3 small enough to fit in your pocket. However, it is a big pain to open and close whenever you need the Graffiti area to appear. Also, the slider on the T3 collapses too easily. Only one side of the slider locks into place.

Overall, if you don't need Wi-fi, the T3 is a great device to choose. I have never fully drained my T3's battery. If you hate the slider and want to use Wi-fi, the TX is a good choice. I don't think I would choose the T5 because of the issues mentioned in earlier posts.

Having owned a T3 for about 4 months now and must say it is still the best Palm powered handheld ever. i also considered a TX but after much deliberation will stay with my trusty T3. Money was not an option in my descision but it came down to a few key points, 1. The T3,s processor is blazing fast. having owned a zire 72 which used the same 312 mhz proccesor as the TX i can say that there is a noticeable difference in processing power especially when browsing the web, The T3 is FAST. 2. The T3 is very well built although the slider might feel a bit flimsy at times it is anything but, it is very well designed as they used 6 contact points to ensure that the unit works perfectly even when open PLUS it is made out of metal as opposed to the TX. 3.Last but not least is the overall Design, The T3 is very Elegant and sexy while still appearing powerful and strong, in either closed or open form it looks great, by far the best looking PDA out there only being rivaled by the Lifedrive. The slider function gathersw alot of criticism, some good some bad but i personally love it as you get the best of both worlds. I would definitely stick to The T3.

Vibrating alerts/USB-universal connections, unique slider(only one and unique feature in T-T2-T3 class) and voice recorder features are ESSENTIAL criteria for choosing T3 over other devices except life drive.
T 3 is the classic collectors' item IMHO

Just bought a TX two weeks ago before making a trip. I felt the non-volatile memory would give me assurance of not losing data....and it did that in spades. It has longer battery life than my T3. It is a little slower than the T3, but that is a minor issue. Though I will continue to use the T3, the TX will be my main device. I love the T3, but the future is with the TX. If I had to vote with my heart the T3 would win hands down. My logical mind says buy the TX. Am hoping drivers will be available for the wireless keyboard soon.

Advantages of T3:
metal case
eye appeal (beauty is in the eye of the beholder...love those buttons)
spring loaded stylus
speed
power on button

Advantages of TX:
longer battery life
non-volatile memory
wi-fi & bluetooth

After 2 weeks of using the TX I really like this unit. If it develops any problems I will post a thread. Good luck with your decision.

Very best wishes

JDon
