The ability to make a fast "to do" or a note usually involves LEAVING the application you're in. You're writing a note, letter, database entry or even spreadsheet, and think "Man I've gotta call that guy," or "this needs to be on the calendar."
In the old days of OS4, you could bring up "TealNotes" and make a quick sketch rather than go to notepad or other drawing app. TealNotes isn't OS5 compatible, and WON'T BE. EVER. I'm still upset.
Anyway, along comes "PenLiteDA" and an accompanying REALLY COOL "partner" DA called "GraffeDA." I'm always hesitant to recommend things that I haven't thoroughly tested - see my disastrous "beta run" of a freeware app called mReset (the developer fixed it THAT night, and posted the fixed version - now it's a killer soft reset button without the stylus, and it's 800 BYTES!). i GIVE IT A good run BEFORE BRINGING IT UP HERE, BUT THIS PenLiteDA and GraffeDA works on the T3 -- very well -- and it's $3!!! It's available for demo/purchase from:
http://www.merry-go-round.net and the author, Tsuyoshi Ushimaru, has "got it goin' on." NOT ONLY can you make a fast note IN THE APP YOU'RE IN, but you can categorize it 4 different ways and those lables are customizeable. Not only that - you can set it to "smooth writing" to make the scrawl a little better.
GraffeDA also pops up in any app, you can copy the text you need transferred, paste it on the line, and EXPORT to "tasks" or "to do" without leaving the app. You can also set the priority!
Some of you may compare this with "Inbox" -- I did -- at first. With Inbox, upon a command slash, brings up its icon on the toolbar and lets you decide whether or not to put it in address, calendar, to do or memo (it won't export straight to Agendus, but Agendus picks it up from "to do/tasks" as an UNFILED item).
HOWEVER - as soon as you indicate where you want it, BOOM - you're out of the app and INTO ToDo. Hope you saved your information. Furthermore, it DOES NOT WORK in WordSmith!! Twice in the last week I wanted to make a "to do" while in WS, and just said the hell with it and exited and opened AGendus.
Well not any more. You do a command stroke, COPY what you want sent to ToDo, bring up GraffeDA and PASTE it on the line! You then hit "Export" and it gives a confirmation banner. Then it disappears and you're still in WordSmith. EEEHHHXXXCELEEENNT!
We all know that there's OS5 compatible and then there's T3 compatible. Well, these work on the T3 and the only thing I'll have to tweak is something in TealScript that allows me to start making a "scrawled notepad entry" in PenLiteDA sooner -- in other words, I must place the stylus on the screen for a split second to let it "know it's about to write." It may be that way on all T3s, but I'm not disabling TealScript to find out. It'll only take about 1/10 of a second to "register" before you can start drawing. As a matter of fact I was so impatient that when I didn't get anything immediately I thought "Great! This doesn't work!" Well it certainly does work and I've got something resembling my old TealNotes capability, plus a VERY FAST and efficient way to enter a ToDo from any application without leaving that app.
See! There is good inexpensive software out there!! Thanks to "TUU's Homepage" at Merry-Go-Round, I'm a happier guy. Especially since PenLIte, Graffe and a 2k database take up less than 20k TOTAL!! Woohoo!!
Now these are "DA" apps - Desktop Accessories. You'll need a DA launcher. I believe Tsuyoshi has a link to one, but if not they're available as freeware (oh oh) or of course you could do it right and get TealLaunch. I've got these set up on the TealLaunch pop up menu, which I activate on the T3 by hitting (even with slider closed!) the little "house;" a popup list comes up and these DAs are listed there.
Now I'm just gonna sit here being happy . . . . .
