Two elite FBI agents were killed Friday during a training exercise off the coast of Virginia Beach.
Veteran Special Agents Christopher Lorek and Stephen Shaw were killed during an exercise that involved a helicopter. The accident happened aboard a Navy Military Sealift Command Ship, which the FBI leases from the Navy, sources told WAVY-TV. The FBI was tight-lipped about the nature of the accident.

The men were members of the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team based in Quantico, Va.
“We mourn the loss of two brave and courageous men,” FBI Director Robert Mueller said in a news release Sunday. “Like all who serve on the Hostage Rescue Team, they accept the highest risk each and every day, when training and on operational missions, to keep our nation safe. Our hearts are with their wives, children, and other loved ones who feel their loss most deeply. And they will always be part of the FBI Family.”

Navy personnel were not part of the exercise, but the elite Hostage Rescue Team, formed in 1983 as a counterterrorism unit, does train with Navy SEALs, WAVY reported.
The accident is under review, and the men’s cause of death has yet to be released.
