Two coasts and the US economic development?

I happen to consider the development of China which has a coastline on the south-eastern part to other Asian countries.
On the contrary, the US has two coast lines, one facing to the Atlantic Ocean and Europe, another one looking at the Pacific Ocean and the Asia.
My question is how this geographical feature of the US affected the current status and the economic development of the US. It is located in the midway between the already developed countries and the rapidly emerging market.
How would it be if only single ocean is provided to the US?
