ruined? installed a 1000watt rms amplifier in my car. I keep gain turned down to about (400-500 rms max). My first alternator has been used for 70,000 miles and went bad. I assumed it was the amplifier that worked it to death because i never had any problems before.
I bought another amplifier (mustang v6 2005) cost me bout 270$. I just got done with finals and started to drive home (16 hour drive), hooked amp back up.
i kept the amp turned down really low and only played two comedy movies on my way home. 4 hours of driving and car totally shut down. Mechanic happened to stop and told me the alternator was bad after we used jumped cables and the car died. I had it towed to a ford dealership and they confirmed it was a bad alternator. The mechanic there told me it may be the amplifier
i am using a 0 guage wire to a 1000 watt rms amplifier turned down to around 400 watt rms to match the lower powered subs. wire running straight from battery.
the guy said i should get a cap and only use a 4 guage wire...
whats the best solution to fix this...and is it really possible a my amp could have killed an alternator in 4 hours? Thanks
