Tweaked my knee hiking, what to do?

About a month ago I went backpacking. It was about 7 hours in with 35# packs and some rough ground. About halfway through the hike my knee started hurting, and by the time we got to the site both my knees were killing me. The first from whatever started it hurting and the other from the strain of compensating.

They hurt like hell that night and the next day were sore but seemed a bit better. I tried walking it off a little and it was no go. After a couple minutes I could barely walk. So I rested and the next day woke up better, but not great. That was the day we were heading back. I had doubts I was going to make it out in one day but as the hike went on my knees got better and better.

I made it out and after a couple of days they seemed fine, except the one knee pops, like when you crack your knuckles. I've been resting it for a month now only taking 1/2 mile walks in the morning and it still feels sort of funny, like it's bruised or something, and as I said it makes a popping sound about half way up when I lift it.

So now my symptoms are;
No real pain during normal activities, just a funny tender feeling.
No swelling, and even when it was severely hurting on the hike it didn't swell.
Full range of motion.
It feels somehow a bit loose, like maybe I stretched a ligament or something?
If I wear a knee brace it feels fine, completely normal, if I take the brace off it feels again tender, not like it hurts but like it might if I pushed it.

That's about it. I've never had any trouble before with my knees, but I'm 50 so it's not a surprise.

So my question is what do you think, and should I try working it harder and see what happens or give it more time?

Thanks
What confuses me is the lack of swelling, and how quickly the knee got better. I mean it started improving in the middle of the hike out. 8 hours of hiking with a 35# pack and it's improving, how bad could the injury be? So then why a month later isn't it 100%?
