TV changeover to Digital Feb. '09...?

I have a little portable TV/tape deck since 30 years -- and now it will become a paperweight. Sure the ads all say "It's SO much better!" But really, all the pocket liquid crystal portables will cease to work -- and I'm quite happy as things are. Why is it "necessary" to eliminate the analog TV signal? It's on FM bandwidth, right, so doesn't interfere with, say microwave cellphone transmission. So why eliminate it?
Converter box for 2" hand-held TV???
