This might sound silly, and i hope i explain what i mean correctly but u know in your house u always have a box in which u can plug a lead straight into ur tv and watch tv straight away, where u only recieve the basic 4 channels. What is this called?? And where is the signal coming from? Thanks.

are u referring to an RF cable that goes from your tv into the wall? Then you are connecting to an outdoor antenna which could be on the roof/ in the attic/ attached to an outdoor wall etc
