Tungsten T5 stops at Task sync.

About every 7 - 10 days whilst doing a hotsync my T5 locks up when it is synchronizing Tasks. I don't use the task function so I'm at a loss to know what the problem is, however, the only way I can resolve the problem is to do a hard reset every time which is a real pain.

Has anyone had the same or similar problem? If so how was it resolved?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Can you please copy your last hotsync log and paste it into a reply here? This will help diagnose what might be wrong. I'm assuming you don't really have to do a hard reset, which erases all data, but a soft reset, which only restarts the Palm but retains your data.

Jim,

Thanks for your response. I tried doing a soft reset after the lock-up, however, it just locks up again when I try the next sync. Each time it locks up at the Tasks sync. and refuses to go any further. The only solution I have found is to do a hard reset which then appears to clear things for a few days.

I checked the sync. log and saw that it covers the past week. There are two notations in red. I would like to paste it in here but it seems awfully long and I'm not sure you would appreciate that. Could I perhaps just copy the relevant sections of the log which contain the red message, might that be of any help?

Thanks for your interest.

Beliceno

Just copy and paste the most recent hotsync log. You don't have to copy the entire thing. Ther's obviously something in a conduit that's causing the probelm and seeing the hotsync log should give us some answers.

Jim,

Here's the last two logs, I hope they might provide a clue as to my problem.

Thanks again for taking time to assist me.

Beliceno

From the logs you posted, it looks like both hotsync's finished normally and you shouldn't have had to reset. Is this correct? If so, is there part of the hotsync log that shows a hotsync that didn't finish normally? This is the one I need to see.

Since this only happens periodically, I doubt that the Tasks hotsync is really your problem. It should blow up every time you hotsync if it was one of the PIM conduits. One of the things you can do is set Tasks to "Do Nothing" on the off chance that this really is the problem. Since it appears you are not using VersaMail, you should also set that conduit to "Do Nothing"

I suspect you have a third party program that you are using every 7-10 days that either has a faulty conduit or there's something corrupted in a file that hosync is trying to backup. Think about your programs and how you use them as that might help find the likely offender.

Jim,

I have tried to send the section of log that shows the errors, however, I cannot send it as the character limit for this reply is 10,000 and the log is about 18,000.

Can I send it in two halves? Any suggestions?

You should be able to just copy that section of the hot sync log that shows the red as Jim indicates.

It may be that you have a redo or a repeating Task that once check off as completed and resets to the next due date could be corrupted and might cause the device to hang.

If you have such a task that repeats or redo's - I'd suggest you delete it and create a new one on the handheld and see if that eliminates the issue.

Jim & Moose Man,

Thanks for your assistance. I am attaching the log for the last couple of times I did a hot sync. You will notice that on the last one I got an error problem as it locked up on syncing Media which its never done before.

I will try the suggestion Moose Man gave and see if that alters things. However, in the meantime, if these logs can help you decipher what the problem is I would be most grateful to know as I'm no Whiz at computers and PDA's.

Thank you both for your kind interest, I really do appreciate it.

As Jim stated, it shows most of the time that the hot sync finished just fine. Of the 3 logs that you posted, the only "hang" was on media.

Here's what I'd try, especially if your syncing to a Toshiba computer:

1. Right click on the Hot Sync in your system tray.
2. Go to the Setup menu
3. Then click on local and then change the speed from "as fast as possible" to 115,200. You got a "timed out" error and that's an indication that the speed is too fast.
4. On the hot sync menu - be certain to only have the Local USB option checked at the top of the menu - assuming that's how your syncing. If your syncing via another method that have the option checked and all other off. This will help the time out error.

As Moose has correctly suggested, port speed may very well be the problem. The 6410 error is catchall for anything that cuases the hotsync process to timeout. I don't think there's a specific conduit that's to blame - the conduit that was being synced when the connection timed out just happens to be the one that hangs.

Go to http://tinyurl.com/dkb9l and follow the steps outlined there to solve the 6140 error.

Thanks Jim & Moose Man,

I will try your suggestions and let you know how things go. This morning I seem to have developed another problem, the computer is not recognizing my T5, something to do with the USB port. It seems like its a never ending series of problems. I begin to despair sometimes!

Thanks again for your continued support, you guys are marvelous.

Carol,

Thanks for your interest. I have checked the USB connection on my desktop and then tried connecting to my laptop and get the same result "USB Device Not Recognized."

As I live in Central America I have no way of obtaining a replacement cable or a cradle speedily, so will just have to wait until a friend in the U.S.A. can send one to me.

In the meantime, if there is anything else I could try I would appreciate your suggestions.

Beliceno

I had a problem with the USB not recognized (after the dreaded update debacle!) and being somewhat technologically challenged I uninstalled Palm Desktop and reinstalled it - that seemed to do the trick but I have absolutely no idea why it worked! I also restarted the desktop after I had uninstalled Desktop and before I reinstalled it. I think it needed to do the search for new hardware with the installation disc in. If you have another USB port you can try that and see if it recognizes the hardware.

I initially had problems with the hotsynch hanging and spent some hours on the phone to Palm helpline - I cant really remember what we did that fixed the problem but they had me doing something with the reg edit files and eventually we started from scratch with a hard reset and reinstalling the latest versions of all applications and the PIM data. It was a pain in the neck but it seems to have worked.

Action49,

Thanks for your interest and suggestions, I will try uninstalling the Palm desktop and see what happens. I will post the results in a day or so.

I appreciate your interest,

Just a brief observation. How much of your time is being taken up by trying to make your T5 work? Aren't these things meant to save our time? I have finally given up on palm PDAs.
