Tungsten T3 w/ Cobalt ?

Since the memory in the T3 is flashable, it is possible to update the rom. However, there are still some technical unknowns about Cobalt.

First, we don't know how much memory is required for Cobalt. We don't know if the T3 has enough flash memory.

Secondly, we don't know if it would be worth the upgrade for T3 users. Rumors have it that there is no landscape mode in the new OS.

Thirdly, I would be very surprised, but happy, if palmOne offered an OS upgrade. In the past couple of years, no OS upgrades have been offered to exisiting Palm users. Users wishing to get additional features have been forced to fork out for a new device.

We'll have to wait and see what happens.

I just read at the Palm Source web site that Cobalt requires at least 16MB of rom. I don't know right off hand how much rom the T3 has.

64 meg of internal I believe.

I think I'm going to sell mine and save my money for something else.

Where would you guys recommend posting it ? besides Ebay :)

It's doubtful that PalmOne will release Cobalt for the T3 because of the seperation between the two companies.

Also, there won't be a financial benefit to do so unless PalmOne decides to charge for an upgrade and that's also unlikely given historical data.

Palmsource could decide to make an upgrade available for a cost but there won't be much benefit for most T3 users to spend the money....unless it's $5.

Plan on getting new hardware bundled with a phone, if you want Cobalt since that's what it really is designed for.

I hope to see another high end Palm PDA (T3 replacement) in the future and I hope the Windows CE platform does not overtake and eventualy drown the Palm OS.

Looks like Palm's market share is slipping even more and especially now with Sony exiting the PDA market.

Anyone have any good news today with regards to Palm? ;)

"At the end of the first quarter of 2004, preliminary data by market researcher Gartner showed the Palm OS with a market share of 40.7%, down from 49% a year earlier, while Microsoft's Windows CE's share has risen to 40.5% from 36.7%. Equally disturbing, the market for the devices that run on those operating systems is shrinking, says Gartner. Worldwide shipments of PDAs, slipped 4.6% in the quarter vs. year-ago levels. "
