Tungsten T3, C, or Sony UX40?

I currently have a Tungsten E that I really enjoyed until it started whining on me. Now, the whining has gotten so bad my ears ring for hours after I turn off the E. Since my 90-day warranty ended just before the whining started, I find that the cost to repair it (if Palm will even do that- they claim the whine is normal!), is almost as much as buying a new unit. So I'm in the market again for another Palm device.

I am currently looking at Palm's Tungsten T3, C and Sony's UX40. Does anyone have any arguments for or against any of these models? Obviously, one of my primary concerns is whether or not these units whine, too.

Bass2Tenor,

I don't know where you may be located, but you may want to check out the thread here about Sony EXITING the PDA market. May make a difference in your decision about what to buy.

HI,
I had gone through no less than 3 T3's when they first came out here in MTL - canada.
The screen whining was rampant in all of them & drove me nuts and I returned all of themand gave up after # 3.
So that may not be a solution to your prodct woes. As much as I love palm - they have left a bitter taste in my mouth after the first T3 burned my SD card - andf I never got a replacement that I was promised by them - but that's another story...
I had a UX 50 (similar to the UX 40) and liked it a good deal - but for my purposes it wasn't practical. I work on the road and having to open and close the unit each time in order to glance an address or apt. made me return it.
I found the battery life of my respective units to be about the same (UX 50 maybe slightly better) - screen on UX is obviously smaller than T3 and landscape is not available for everything (although there was a prog I used - forget the name at the moment) that allowed you to take advantage of full screen onmany apps who weren't setup for it.

Overall the form factor is probably (at least in my opinion) the biggest difference and one you ought to consider. If you have a store with a good return policy nearby - why not try one out for a week and see what you like.
I wouldn't worry about sony exiting the PDA market in terms of making your decision. What good has palm's customer service been to you Anyway?
FWIW,
Nick

My choice should be

1.Any pda with smaller form factor with standard pocketability
2.Any pda using SD cards
3.pda with bluetooth
4.320x480 screen with portrait & landscape mode

i.e T3

:p

I would go with the tungsten T3 for the great specs of it:
64 MB Ram
400 MHZ XScale Processor
Bluetooth
320x480
High-Def+
Slider - Compact - Design
& alot more.

If you get the noise just return it and your best bet is to go to a store and buy it and demand that you open the box check the screen and see if you hear anything.

Anyway's it's your palm your money and your choice !
Have Fun !!

As is always the case with these things, it usually comes down to personal preference. I have a Clie UX-50 and I love it. I haven't noticed any whining with it and I've had it a few months now. I really just like having a keyboard option along with built-in Bluetooth and WiFi. This device has everything but then it should considering how much it costs. Any way, if you'd like something cheaper, my choice is the T3. Great screen and I love the slider technology.
