Tungsten E Fatal Alert Message

Everything was going fine until I opened the documents to go on the PDA and was told that this device did not support this version of documents to o and to visit dataviz....anyways, I deleted it from the tungsten and then was trying to hot sync and have continually received "fatal alert DataMgr.c, Line:9529, index out of range" ever since. I have tried resetting the computer, restarting the computer, and the only option lieft is to reset my Pda constantly. I am an unexperienced computer user and really could use some help because if I've screwed up this pda I'll be in big trouble...Coffee jumped out of my cup onto my last pda and bathed all the circuits....

Have you ever installed any of the updates for Documents to Go on your T|E? If not, that's probably the cause of the problem. The first thing to do is a warm reset to break out of the reset loop. You can read about how to do a warm reset at http://tinyurl.com/6c9tk if you don't know how to do a warm reset. Once your Palm is running again, go to http://www.dataviz.com/downloads/redownloads/index.html and download the latest upgrade for the T|E. The version that shipped with the T|E is known to have bugs and this upgrade fixes most of them.

thanks for the help but I need some more... I did the warm reset as shown on the web page you advised me of and then followed by a soft reset. I tried to sync after that and once again got the same fatal alert message. The only thing that I have done different between when it was syncing earliet and now getting a fatal alert message was deleting the doc to go file. Would that have caused this? Is it something I shouldn't have deleted? I can't do any updates without the doc to go being on my palm

I don't know if this helps at all...I was plugging in my pda to recharge and accidently hit the sync star. Without having the sync cable connected, it gave me the same fatal alert message. Does that help?

Do another warm reset. Go to the link I gave yuu for DataViz and download the update. This updates both files on the PC and DTG on the Palm. Set the DTG conduit to Do Nothing for the first hotsync so you don't get the error message again. Once the updated files have been synced to the Palm set the DTG conduit to Sync again. You have a corrupted DTG file and hopefully the update will fix the file enough to allow you to hotsync and then delete the remnants of the corrupted file.

I don't know what I am doing wrong...I updated and downloaded the DTG and when it told me to hot sync or to skip and do later, I wasn't sure what to do so I tried syncimg with the DTG set at Do Nothing and received the fatal alert message so I did a warm reset, followed by a soft reset and then this time opted to skip and do later. On my desktop, I verified that the DTG conduit was set at to do nothing and when I tried to hotsync I received the same Fatal Alert message DataMgr.c,Line:9529, Index out of range.
Do you have any other suggestions?

Am I better off doing a hard reset? or will that not overwrite the problem?..or should I create a new user?? or.....just trying to think of options

At this point, I would do the following:

1. Do a Backup to your SD card if you have one
2. Change the name of your current backup folder on your PC to backup_old
3. Do a hard reset on your Palm
4. Hotsync. Use the same username that you have now, don't enter a new username.

If you can now hotsync successfully, write back and we can talk about what to do next.

If you can believe it, I actually did it! thank you so much...What should be my next step so that I don't run into the same problem?
I really do appreciate all of your help!

One other question....the docs to go is now a trial version for 30 days. On the last pda it wasn't. It was the software that came with the pda install.?

Congratulations. It sounds like you didn't quite follow instructions about upgrading though. On the Dataviz download page, there's a place to enter your serial number to get to the free upgrade area. There's also a link that tells you how to find your serial number. It sounds like you just downloaded the latest trial version.

You have two choices. The first is to go to the free download area and get the T|E bugfix upgrade. You can then delete the trial version of DTG and then install the T|E upgrade. If I remember right, DTG is in ROM on the T|E so deleting the trial version should still leave the original version intact and allow to hotsync the update. If it's not in ROM, it will be on your CD and you'd have to reinstall from the CD and then apply the upgrade.

The second choice, if you like the trial version, is to buy it. It does have some nicer features than the DTG version 6.x that came with the T|E.

In terms of avoiding things like this in the future, always assume that any piece of hardware or software you buy has bugs and that the manufacturer's will release updates to fix them when the beta testers (which means retail customers now) report them. Check back at the hardware and software web sites on a regular basis to check for updates. It's also a good idea to peruse forums like this regularly since widespread problems are usually posted very quickly.

Actually, last night I was fiddling a little more and all I needed to do was put the serial # and reg # from the email sent to me from data viz on the pda. all seems to be well. Thank you so much for all of your help. From reading some other postings, I remember reading that you volunteer your time to do this and I just want you to know how much you are appreciated. Thank you again. It was a learning experience.

Ah, OK, I apologize then, you did do the upgrade properly. I forgot they send you an e-mail with a new serial number when you upgrade.

You're quite welcome for the help. Many of the problems are fairly simple once you know how to solve them but they can be quite perplexing for the average user. There are a lot of other knowledgeable users here but me and we all try to help out when we can, since it was some other nice person who first helped us when we were confused. :)
