Trying to reset 1999 Bmw 323i Service Alert But Get Weird Numbers....?

I am following the guide on resetting my bmw I hold down the left odometer button then turn ignition key I get something that looks like a reset but its not! Then I push it again on the right side it shows 1.0 then i push the button again i get 1.1. then 1.1. On another occasion I get 1 2 3 4 5 when i keep pushing the button. I just want to reset my inspection reminder! Can someone please help me?
