Trying to open FLA file in flash but unexpected file format?

I downloaded a flash template and now want to edit it in macromedia flash MX but it keeps stating that there is an 'unexpected file format'... how do i get around this, I simply want to edit the template.
I have flash, dreamweaver, fireworks and microsoft expression web... can i use any other thing to make this work... please help, thanks
