More details:
The main character's name was, I think, Addie, possibly short for Adelaide. Her mother had run away to Belize (?). She was raised by two aunts. One was named Evelyn and the other may have been named Lydia. Her mother was called Paisie or Pasie - I think this was short for Aspasia.
I think the story may have been set in New Orleans ... I know it was set in a place where the ground was watery. The main character's family had a mausoleum, because it was so wet that burying people in the ground wasn't feasible. The aunts were constantly wearing mourning for dead relatives.
The main character played with paper dolls, liked to sketch, and wanted to be an artist because she believed her mother was one.
I may have misremembered some or all of these details. I've tried searching the Internet for these details and failed. Help?
