Troubles with Verizon land line?

We just recently switched from T- Mobile to Verizon land line and internet.
I do not know why, but when we talk on the phone the clearity is terrible.
You can barely hear what the other person is saying, and the sound goes up and down.
The other side can't hear us too well either.
Is verizon that terrible, or is there something we need to fix? What could it be?
The phone we have worked perfectly fine with hearing in t-mobile though, but we switched for other reasons
