Trouble with HDTV and Comcast Motorola Cable Box?

I just bought an hdmi cable for my tv. I want to plug it into my cable box and have it run to my tv. I did this and on the cable box it only allows me to choose either 480i or 480p. My tv is 1080p too. I want to know how to get my tv channels in 1080p format and how to watch HD channels???
