Trouble with Chevy Cobalt?

My key got stuck in the ignition of our 2005 Chevy Cobalt and nothing would open, not even the trunk or back doors. What causes this to happen? We were told that it might be the "interlock". What is this and why did we not know we had it? Also of what use is it?

i do not know what a interlock is but my car key used to stick in the ignition but it did not affect other parts of the car i believed they put a part in the ignition and it worked again the only thing you can do is take it to your dealer to fix.
