Hi... i was hopening to get some opinions regarding my back trouble?

im 25 and 8 months ago i started with lower back pain, which affected me if i tried to run/keep fit.

I went to the doctor after about 6/8 weeks to see if could get a diagnosis on this problem. After x-rays that shown signs of a possible case of Ankylosing spondylitis, he refered me to a rheumatologist. it turns out now 7 months down the line that this is incorrect, as i do not have the jene for it and the MRI scan has shown nothing, he said to quotes his exact worRAB 'you may have nothing more than mechanical back pain'??? i have been to many physio appoinments now and i have recently started to do some light excersise (to keep the pounRAB off :) ).

Now every morning i wake up, i have to get out of bed and bend my back as it feels really stiff! when doing this i get cracking sensation/sound in the lower back area, if i were to discribe the sound it is like cracking your knuckles all at the same time, as if it was releasing something???

I am no medical expert and would really appriciate it if anybody had any tips on how to get rid/manage or even help with an answer to what i may have.

Thanks

Lee

It sounRAB like you need another medical opinion - one doctor said one thing and the other said something completely different and "mechanical back pain" is not a diagnosis. Keep pushing for the doctors to get you a diagnosis that you can work with. There are other options for diagnosis - like a standing MRI. Once you have a working diagnosis it is much easier for you to looking into treatments.

Being so young is a plus overall, but often you get ignored by doctors because they think that you are too young to really be having problems.

Good luck.

Consider getting a consultation with an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon. Not sure what type of specialist you may have already seen - but an OSS or Neurosurgeon may be a good choice for further review.

Thankyou... i do feel like i have been left to deal with this on my own... Typical English NHS!!!! not sure why i pay my insurance :(

Thanks again

Keep at it and get another opinion. There must be symptoms that made your original doctor point that way.

There is a form of AS that does not test positive with the gene called undifferntiated AS.

HLA-B27, seen in over 95% of people with ankylosing spondylitis, is commonly absent in undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy. Approximately only 20-25% of people with USpA test positive for HLA-B27

While x-ray of the pelvis region (where the sacroiliac joint is located) is essential for diagnosis in AS, subtle erosions do not always show in x-rays of undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy patients.

Go back and get Primary care doc to help you.

Good luck!
