trouble connecting my laptop to tv?

okay so i have an HP g60 laptop and a dell 63 in hdtv both have hdmi ports and when i plug them in to hook them up my computer will flash as though it is connecting and go to a differnt resolustion but nothing comes up on the tv and yes i have it on the right input and i've messed with graphics properties with like exted desktop or mirrored and all that i just cant get it to work please help. ten points to whoever can help me get this working. and i already tried the fn f4 thing
