Hi everyone,

I have undergone a nuraber of antibiotic treatments for acne - previously oxytetracyclin and a very similar one, and also erithromicin. I saw a dermatologist this morning who doesn't seem to want to prescribe me accutane as I was hoping for, and instead I've got a course of Trimethoprim.

Has anyone taken this drug before? In all the online resources I can find about it, it makes no reference to it being a drug to treat acne???

Cheers

Tom

Hi ive been on roaccutane for 2wks now and from day 1 i got a urine infection and was given trimethroprim for the urine infection as it kills bacteria. I aint ever heard of it being used to treat acne. Maybe you were given it coz it kills bacteria xxxx

Hi again i just saw you are from luton, i live in milton keynes. You should ask your derm for LYMECYCLINE its a tetracycline and cleared my acne. I had to come off it thats why im on roaccutane now. Hope this helps x

Thanks Kinsky. This drug is horrible, after just a couple of days my skin is ablaze with acne. Im told to stick it out for a couple of weeks - this had better be worth it!!

Hi, I have been on the internet looking into trimethoprim and it says that its only used to treat urine and bladder infections!! I really cant see why you would be given it for acne. Im going to ask my G.P. Seriously, after you have tried trimethoprim ask for lymecycline. Are you seeing a dermatologist or your G.P?

I forgot to finish off my post about this!
It was prescribed to me by a stand-in dermatologist at my local hospital.
The flare up eventually died down and for a while my skin was better, but the drug soon stopped being effective, and has left me with dark marks on my upper cheekbones (scars?).
Overall - totally not worth it. I wish I didn't have to go through 5 treatments I knew wouldn't work to get to accutane, which is working like a miracle...
