Tried internet browser on a Verizon phone and it was really slow, is this common?

Played with my nieces' Blackberry and trying to do anything on the internet was very slow. Figured it was because it was a bad area but she says even in the city its slow.

I'm thinking of getting an Android, but if internet isnt any faster, it'll drive me nuts.
( and 4G is a long ways off here in the country )

Whats been your experience with Verizon Wireless internet on your phone?
