Tricked into acrylic nails. nail tech expertise needed!!?

I've gotten acrylic nails at my local mall hundreds of times. They always cut/electric file down my nails, put a tip on them and then use that purple-ish liquid and powder to apply the acrylic on the nail. They were ruining my nails so I looked everywhere in my area for a salon that does gel nails and I finally found one, the cost was $50 so I went and got them done. Again, the same process was used, filed nail down to flakey & dry, glued on tips, and that liquid and powder. I didn't really read up on the process so I didn't know what gel nails were supposed to be really, just thought they were better for the nail, looked more natural and lasted longer. But still I got the fake chunky and thick look of acrylics so I am fully convinced that they told me I was getting gel nails (a service they offered for $45+tip) when they really gave me some shitty acrylics ($20+tip)

Anyway all I'm looking for is support on the process of gel nails not using powder or UV lights. I'm just angry and want to call and complain, I just want to have my facts straight!! Haha thanks!
