Treo 650 and WIFI options - FYI

If you frequent here, you may already know that I covet the Treo 650 - even though my mobile phone service is T-mobile.

Because of this, I have been doing some looking around and researching. This came from another group that I hang my hat as well....PDAEssentials:

"There's nothing formally released, but at least one clever third-party has developed Wi-Fi drivers for the Treo 650 - you need to use the Palm Wi-Fi card.

You can download the drivers at

The user feedback suggests it's a bit hit or miss, though.

Other users have reported that Palm Support has told them that a Wi-Fi update will be coming for the 650... and won't need any additional hardware, as it'll use the transmitter built in for Bluetooth. I haven't seen this formally announced.

The best solution I've seen so far is the enfora Wi-Fi sled for the Treo 650... which is bulky, but uses its own battery, which is nice. It should be available later this month. You can see it here:

This just looks like a strong possiblity of me jumping from coveting to purchasing when this is released.

I installed Shadowmite's WiFi650-600.prc and although it DID lock onto my home's WiFi signal, it also caused my Treo 650 to perform continuous reset loops that could not be resolved with warm or system resets. I had to perform a hard reset and resync my 650. I had read about this and other problems on two Treo forums to which I belong (TreoCentral.com and MyTreo.net) where some users reported success and others, like me, ran into difficulties. The problems that we encountered may be caused by conflicts with 3rd party applications, but it was enough to make me uninstall the WiFi patch and start to save my penny's for the Enfora sled. I'm hoping in the interim that Palm releases another ROM update that will enable WiFi on the Treo. ... BTW, Shadowmite is a genius! He has been able to create ROM update patches (long before Palm released them) that solve memory storage issues, activate DUN, enable WiFi, etc., etc. His web site is www.shadowmite.com and he has posted a lot of good information. e.g. he found that Palm's WiFi application is already in the Treo 650's ROM, but has been deactivated. Maybe this is to keep the Treo from competing with Palm's WiFi-equipped LifeDrive? ... I guess I'll have to keep my trusty T3 with me if I want to access WiFi on a Palm. :(
