Trek 1000, is this a good bike?

I'm buying a used road bike for my boyfriends birthday. I found one on ebay who's bidding will end shortly. The current bid is at 130. I plan to bid no higher than $150 (shipping is $65) bringing what I'm paying total to $215. Is this bike worth it for the price? I heard Treks were good starter bikes (this bike will just be used for a 2 mile round trip commute to work). But I honestly don't know much about them. Is the Trek 1000 a newer model than the Trek 330 for instance? I found one locally selling for $175- don't know which is the better deal and having the bike shipped to my doorstep is more convenient than trying to finda way to rope it to the back of my car. The ebay trek is 55cm. And I am buying this bike for someone who is 5'9''. I think the sizing sounds right, doesn't it? Even if it's EVER so slightly too small, I think that's better than too big. This is the bike... would you pay this?

it sounds slightly big for someone 5'9".

i am 5'11" and my 55 cm ti bike is as big as i can ride.

the trek 1000 is about a thousand dollars retail when new.

if it is in good shape $215 is a good deal.
