Treating borer wounds in an old apple tree?

I have an old apple tree that's been neglected for the last decade or so. despite no pruning, rampant suckers, and terrible cedar rust, it's still in okay shape. However, there are two large wounds facing upwards where I believe large branches have been broken off. Earlier in the year I noticed that slugs and what I believe to be borers living inside these holes, and quite clearly digging deeper. Both holes are about 3 inches in diameter and remain bogged with water year round, as well as mold.

How do I go about treating these? I've inherited the trees from my grandfather, who took very good care of them. My parents however, didn't care for them at all, and they've become quite frail and bushy.
My first bet was parafilm wax, but I'm worried that the wax will just hold in the moisture and cause more rotting. Any tips on treatment? The tree is still in good health, so I'm hoping it can recover with a little aid.
