Travel to Australia, visa information?

I am a permanent resident of the US and not a citizen. One of the requirements to travel to Australia is an invitation from a family member to come. But because I don't have family in Australia, I can't get a letter from a family member there. I am also not going for business, just a vacation. Is there anyway to bypass the invitation letter needed for the visa?
 
you can just come here without a visa if you are just on vacation, for a period of 3 months.
after that you need a visa, be it student, business etc.
