The path to making a living in travel journalism is long and arduous. First, you need to establish yourself in a local market as a photographer. I suggest doing "stringer" work for any local publication that will have you. Next, you will need to join and participate in professional journalistic organizations (NPPA, SMP are good ones). This will give you an opportunity to become known and network with others in the field. Finally, you will need to be ready to go where the jobs take you. This isn't always pleasant, but sniffing out the jobs and the employers willing to hire you is a good part of your potential for success.
I've been in the business of professional photography for over 30 years and have seen the industry shift tremendously during that time period. The only consistent factors you can depend upon that will get you where you want to be are persistence, passion and preparation. If you don't have those three in equal proportion, you'll never make it, but if you have them in huge amounts, you will succeed.
You probably won't get rich, may face huge hardships and constant competition, but if you really are willing to toss all your heart and soul into it, the sacrifices will be rewarded by your achievement.
