Travel across the USA

I normally use my phone on the East Coast (Boston, NY, Florida) and I went out to Wyoming and on the screen where it normally says "T-Mobile" it has been a whole bunch of random things, one of which being Edge. You know what this is about? Will I be charged for any sort of "roaming"?

Thanks,
David

~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~ As long as you don't have a regional plan, there should not be any roaming charges. I am unsure about what the strange text was, perhaps the service provider in Wyoming? I am sure someone on here will know.

That means you're roaming (different carriers in your area) and EDGE is the network type, such as GSM or GRPS. As long as you have the national plan you should be fine.

The Edge that appeared on your screen where T-Mobile usually is was referring to the network you were roaming on, Edge Wireless, along with all of the other names you saw.

maestrowork, you would be incorrect in this case because dwagman was referring to the space at the top center of the screen that shows the carrier's name, not the top right section which displays the data connection type.

Also it should be noted that T-Mobile does charge for data roaming.

but if he's roaming on a different carrier it wouldn't read T-Mobile anymore. It will say Carrier A, B or C instead. There's the carrier such as "T-Mobile" or "Cingular" in the center, and then there's the network on the right (Edge, GSM, etc.) I think that's what he meant by "random" words anyway. I can't verify the data roaming but I assume you're right.

EDGE= The name of radios the Ericsson 2206 cabinets that are used by GSM carriers... You were in a edge network.. (High(er)) speed data capabile...funny you don't see that on the east coast..

Ps..

Wireless contractor/network commisioning.

I read that tmobile charges for data roaming? I do not have the "national plan" so if I decide to go to Colorado for a weekend and my pearl is on I will be charged for roaming? Sorry for getting off topic

If you have a regional plan and you are roaming and you make a call you will be charged roaming but if it says t-mobile while you r using data you should be just fine. But I can be wrong hopefully if I'm wrong someone correct me.

I dont have a regional plan, so I would assume that its a full USA plan. I was not referring to the EDGE next to the signal bars, it always said EDGE and i actually had 4/5 bars up in Wyoming (Jackson Hole), and the data was pretty fast (plugged it into laptop and used it as a modem most of the time since the hotel charged way too much for internet). I was referring to the carrier area, I guess, where it usually says T-Mobile but it said Edge, among other things which i don't recall, but I dont know about the roaming. I know that a friend with a treo used it up in Canada with Cingular and got like a $500 bill since it was international data roaming and he had it to get his mail 1x every 5 mins (stupid treo).

When I went to Canada a couple months ago I called my carrier and added Canada to my national plan for 20 bucks as I use my BB a ton. This saved me approx.150 over 3 days(I told I use my BB a lot). Pays to call your carrier before you wander off too far.

If Edge showed up in the carrier field, you were probably roaming on the Edge Wireless network. Apparently TMO has a roaming agreement with them.

Hope this helps

Also you don't get charged anything extra from Tmobile for data roaming within the US. I have seen though that our roaming partners will sometimes charge you for using their data service

Sounds like you were picking up EDGE wireless in WY. on that carrier in 1900 Mhz the per MB charge is 10.00 unless you are using tzones. On many roaming carriers that T-mobile has an agreement with there are no charges but in the case of EDGE wireless there are data charges that would be applicable to your usage
