Transmission problems on a chrysler 97 town and country. ?

The car simply wont go into gear.
it wont go into gear when we try to back up out of the driveway but sometimes it works. when it does work it will work the whole time. its just like when its just starting?
what could be the problem?

When the transmission works sometimes and not others that is a good sign that it is shot. Whether it can be rebuilt or has to be replaced is a viable question, and you want to ask if the car is worth it.
