Transmission on 1994 Buick Century?

Is there a fail-safe system of some sort that kicks in if the transmission fluid level gets too low? The engine temperature was running just under the danger level until transmission fluid was added, then it jumped to where the manual said it should be. I recently inherited the car, and in some ways, it has not been properly maintained. I'm trying to get it running how it should be.
Oil was changed two months ago, radiator is good, relatively new plugs, and brand new plug wires.

if the trans fluid is to low then it wont shift into higher gears.
if you want it running right just do a complete tune up, and flush out all fluids and change them, then other things as you go like tires, alignment, brakes etc.
