Ok, here is what I learn today from a 30 year Harley engine builder I ran into today in Gettysburg, out here on vacation. Has a nice shop on hwy 30 east of gettysburg. He had a 07 RK on the lift replacing the tranny with exactly the same problem I had in Fla when mine went out. Yep, main shaft bearing failure. These worthless bags of junk at HD put bearings in these tranny with PLACTIC bearing casings made in CHINA. He showed me the replacements for it and it is the same bearing that is failing in all these 6 speeds tranny's, same part number as from the factory. He told me best thing to do was to junk that 6 speed and put a 5 speed in it and my troubles would be over.
Well, with only 2500 miles on this 2010 bag of junk FLHTCU I'm going to run the heck out it till it fails and then I'm going to take the busted gear box to Milwaukee and ask for an explanation. Im only 3 hours from the tranny plant in Milwaukee....I want a dadgum good explanation as to why I paid 25,000 for a peice of junk with Chinese bearings in it. If I don't get the answers I want then I'll see an attorney and see if I can't get my money back. Im ticked off....this junk is already showing signs its gonna go out..... Read the post above I found on another forum. I did as he said and removed the trans inspection cover and WAMO.....metal fragments.....this junk is gonna do the same dadgum thing as the RK did.......ANd another thing about oils and tranny gear oils....this 30 year Harley engine builder swears by AMSOIL 20/50 in the motor and primary and Amsoil 75/110 in the tranny......He told me he has raced harley engines for years on amsoil and not once has ever had scoring on any engine parts. Also stated that he wouldn't put HD oils of any kind in a used lawn mower, said he thought more of the mower than to do that to it..
I asked him then why is it that some bikes will run 30,000 or more miles with the sixspeed trannys and never have an issue with bearing failure. He said its all in how that bearing is pressed in, very easy to distort the PLASTIC bearing casing if not pressed in right.....he didn't seem to think it was an oil issue no matter what oil you use. I wonder now if both my scooters were built on Friday or Monday
