Traditional hand-drawn animation

I'm not trying to be funny but if a cartoon isn't hand-drawn or CGI animated, what other methods are there? And if no one is drawing the characters, how do they create them? Does it really count as someone's character design if a computer program helped them do it? I just don't get it.

Stop motion, for one. You could also point to 2D digital animation (such as Flash), although depending on your definition that could also fall under either hand-drawn or CGI. And then there are the 2D art techniques which technically speaking aren't drawing (such as painting).

I'm not sure what you mean here. If you're referring to 3D CGI, then the characters are first conceieved by a designer and then modelled using computer software. you should be able to find out more if you look at behind-the-scenes material on CGI films.

For one thing, CGI animation IS hand-drawn. The original designs are drawn by hand before they're animated by computer. So yes, it most it most definitely does count as someone's character design. Computers don't replace artists in CGI; they're merely a tool which assists in the process, just like ink, paints and cameras.

As for other types of animation, there's stop motion and clay animation and puppetoons (although like CGI, the original designs are hand drawn before the final renderings).
