I know the shift in what appeals to the younger generation has changed over the years, but are there cartoons you see today that have a perfect blend of humor, kid-friendly content and a dash of appeal to the older crowd?
As far as action goes I think Avatar hit some of their mature themes (such as physical/emotional abuse, war, and even love) perfectly, and I love how Phineas & Ferb and Chowder break the fourth wall from time to time and even squeeze some references in that goes over kids heads. I remember while watching the video for P&F's "Squirrels in my Pants," my little sister asked me what's a government grant. I cracked up trying to explain it to her, just because it's something in a kid's song that most kids wouldn't get. And in an episode of Chowder there was an exchange that went a little something like this:
Chowder: Mung! Truffles! I know you weren't in this episode but please! Help me!
(shot to Mung and Truffles to the side)
Mung: What is he talking about? We're right here.
Truffles: Should we help him?
Mung: Well unfortunately for us this is the all the screen time we get.
I think more of this in cartoons definitely couldn't hurt.
