I am graduating college student looking to go out on my own for my first car. I have heard from all the grown up that Toyotas or a Subaru would be my best bet. I would like to get the flashy sedan but I want something that would be practical, last, and give me the best dollar for my buck. I keep hearing from all the retired people they have had their Toyota/Subaru's greatly exceeding 200,000 miles with no major problems and great in terms of rust (I live in Buffalo). So i was wondering if there was any truth in their claims and what would be my best starter car as an adult.

I would go with Toyota. Subarus are excellent vehicles but should anything go wrong, Toyota parts are easier to find and cheaper. Toyotas are also easier to work on.

Since you live in Buffalo I would go with something like a Subary Legacy or Impreza. Subaru's have all wheel drive and in the tough Buffalo winters, that might be a valued feature!

If you are looking for something reliable, and practical, then Toyota pretty much sets the standard there.

Suburarus are nice vehicles but I wouldn't go with one unless I were specifically in the market for a all wheel drive high performance compact sports car (WRX STi), or a mid-size SUV (Forester).

Sounds like Toyota is your best bet.

i would get a toyota (or anything from japan really) because they are cheap, get really good mpg, and last forever. i have a sentra (i know its nissan and not toyota, but they are basically the same thing) with more than 200,000 miles on it that spent the majority of its life in nyc in the snow and traffic and its a manual and i have never had to replace the clutch or any other major part. the biggest expense with my car has been the custom paint job i am doing myself and the sound system.
subaru is great if you want to make it really fast though. its really about your intentions for the car other than just driving it (interior room, features, flashy custom parts, etc)
hope that helps :)

Yes, both Toyota and Subaru make extremely reliable vehicles. Another manufacturer not listed that is just as good is Honda.

Honda Accord or Civic
Toyota Camry or Corolla
Subaru Legacy or Impreza

Those are my recommendations, the 1st listed is the fullsize car and the 2nd is the compact option.

If you live in Buffalo I would highly recommend the Subaru over both the Toyota and Honda just because of the AWD system that Subaru offers. It is much safer and more convienent driving in the snow.
