Toyota sales suspension: is it safe to buy a RAV4 made in Japan?

On Toyota's own site, they state that they are suspending sales of 2009-2010 RAV4 vehicles. But our dealer says that doesn't apply to vehicles made in Japan. It seemes to me that Toyota would be shouting from the rooftops if some of their vehicles were safe to buy, so this seems fishy to me. Does anyone know anything???
