Toyota Matrix 2005, Oil Problems?

Hello Good day, I have a 2005 toyota matrix, this morning check the oil level in the bayonet and is almost half, I worried about that, I think something is wrong because the exhaust has a black residue that Oil relate to that, my friend who check the car told me that the toyota corolla usually consume oil but not necessarily be burned, but no, Maybe someone of you knows the reason why you do that, thanks ten points to best answer accurate
