Toyota *is* a company. Regard Toyota as a single company.

"Is a company". Toyota is a group noun, and only one. It has no other meaning than "Toyota", which your brain interprets as a car manufacturer with 100 000 staff.

American convention is to keep everything singular (e.g., Toyota IS a Japanese automaker)
British convention is to pluralize it when it's a group of people (e.g., Toyota ARE releasing new models this year, the government ARE working on a solution to the budget crisis)
As for other English-speaking regions, I think it depends on the colonial history.
