toyota/honda or hyundai?

I am on a budget and want to buy a car. I want something reliable that won't need to see the mechanic very often. I can afford a 97-98 honda (or toyota) or a newer, like 2002 hyundai. I know hondas are more reliable. but since I can't afford a new one, should I go with a Hyundai ? being 4-5 years newer, can I expect them to have less problems?
 
ANYTHING BUT A HYUNDAI!!! Hondas all the way. My bro has a 93 civic that has been beat to hell with 280000 miles on it and still goes strong. Ha my hondas for sale if ya wanna buy it, im getting a faster one :P. But for real, hondas last forever.
