Toyota Celica "Fuel Door" Light Stays On?

I have a 54 plate Toyota Celica. Recently the "Fuel Door" light on the dash has come on and stays on all the time. I have opened and shut the fuel door many times and it is definetly shut securely, yet the light remains on (even when the car is switched off). Can anyone help?

I don't want to take it to my Toyota dealer, as it will be very expensive if I take it there.
