Toyota Camry 1998 fueling/idling problem?

I just bought a used 98 Camry with 180,000 kilometers on it. I have only had it a month and I have fueled twice. The first time I gassed up, the idling was going haywire, up and down and I had to really press down on the accelerator to keep the car going. I pulled to the side of the road and the engine stalled on me.
I took my car to mechanic, he said there were two "soft codes" on my car, P0105 and P0172. He said he was not able to determine the problem, the car was working fine.

Just yesterday, I went to gas up and when I went to start the car, the engine would not turn over. I had to really hit the accelerator to the floor to get the engine to turn. I got it in gear and peeled out of the station just to move the car to the side. As I slowed, the car stalled again, the idling going crazy.

I waited 5 minutes then started the car again, really revving it up. I took my foot off the accelerator and it seemed to be OK. It's been like that since, the problem has not come back.
This only seems to be occurring when I put gas in the car. What seems to be the problem?

PS: I posted this problem before but I failed to mention that the car has a V4 cylinder engine, therefore one of the answers I received that it might be the mass air flow meter is not the case, since my car does not have one. Can anyone help me? I have taken it to two mechanics already and they cannot pinpoint the problem; HELP!

Hi

Have the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor checked out. There is either a lack of vacuum to it or a circuit fault at it which is causing the injector pulse to be increased and the engine to run rich.

Very best regards

You need a Toyota mechanic. The guy you went to isn't paying attention to what the codes indicate. Rich fuel and Manifold pressure problems are why the 4 cylinder engine isn't running right. The 98 Camry is either a V6 or an inline 4- there is no V4 Camry. They are fuel injected. When you have Toyota service the car, it will be fixed right.

Do you really mean 180,000 kilometers, or 180,000 miles? If miles, it's gotten up there in mileage where lots of things finally need replacing. If Kilometers, that's much less than miles, but still up in the drive it easy stage.

Perhaps the problem could be fuel. If you are in Colorado, you might try using higher grade fuel. That 85 octane stuff just doesn't cut it. And ethanol and gasohol are really poor fuels for this car. Where's your nearst Sunoco?
